Barry has written a post on Search Engine Roundtable, how do you get your ads in Google's Gmail?

A thread in Digital Point inquires how does one place an ad in Gmail:
I want to place text ads solely in Gmail. Trouble is, Google forces you too choose between content advertising (that includes millions of other sites) and site targeted (that don't let you choose the word that are interested in). Is there any way out.

To which Barry replies that Gmail ads are taken from Google's content network. He says, “Google does matching on the text of the email, much like how they match the text of the content of a page on the AdSense network.”

According to Gmail Help:
Ads in Gmail are placed in the same way that ads are placed alongside Google search results and, through the Google AdSense program, on content pages across the web. The goal is to provide users with helpful ads, links and content relevant to their specific interests.
Advertising and related information are shown using a completely automated process. Ads are selected for relevance and served by Google computers using the same contextual advertising technology that powers our AdSense program. This technology enables Google to target dynamically changing content such as email or daily news stories.
