In a marketing lesson that is worth a billion dollars, Google has learned that brand names can be crucial for business success. In the Official Google Blog, it has been announced that Froogle (a pun on "frugal") has been renamed as Google Product Search.
According to a CNET story,
Google Product Search also will boost awareness of Google Checkout online payment service by allowing searchers to set the results to display only items from merchants that offer a Google Checkout option.
Sound much like Yahoo!’s arrangement with PayPal, which displays a little icon next to the search listing that enables payments through PayPal.
According to Google's vice president of search product and user experience Marissa Mayer,
"I don't think we understood the complications with rolling out another brand…While it was a cute and clever name, it had issues around copyright and trademark, as well as internationalization…The pun (to "frugal") isn't obvious."
