As seen in a report by Barry Schwartz Google Gears was launched today on Google developer Day.

Explaining the new service, “Google Gears (BETA) is an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality using following JavaScript APIs:

Store and serve application resources locally

Store data locally in a fully-searchable relational database

Run asynchronous Javascript to improve application responsiveness"

This is a first, as there never has been any other that provided "Gears-enabled offline capabilities". Eric Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of Google commented on Google Gears saying, "We're tackling a key limitation of the browser in order to make it a stronger platform for deploying all types of applications and enabling a better user experience in the cloud. We believe strongly in the power of the community to stretch this new technology to the limits of what's possible and ultimately emerge with an open standard that benefits everyone."

On a broader sense, when ZDNet asked Bret Taylor, Group Product Manager Google's developer products what to expect on Google Developer Day 2007. He said the main focus will primarily fall on: integration and reach.

“Integration is how Google is exposing its infrastructure and scalable services. For example the Google Maps API and Google Data APIs. These are XML web services that let you use Google servers as a backend to your applications.

Reach means ways to empower developers to reach Google users. We have a whole lot of servers and lots of traffic. Developers want better ways to access that traffic. For example through the Google Gadgets API they can incorporate their products into the iGoogle personalized home page.â€

Some of the discussions at Google Developer Day 2007 will include:

“How we are making our APIs work together

Versioning issues with APIs

Why we give these APIs away for free

Thoughts on new RIA technology

How Google is involved in standards bodies

What Google hopes to achieve out of Google Developer Dayâ€

Google Developer Day 2007 will be live webcast from London.
