Google's Statistical Machine Translation Launched
April 29th, 2006 | 925 Views RSS Feed
One of the recent projects of Google that goes live is the machine translation. This particular feature will enable everyone across the world to acquire any kind of information in a language of your choice, while staying in any part of the world. According to Google Research most state-of-the-art commercial machine translation systems which are used today have been developed by using a rules-based approach. Not only this, it also requires a lot of hard work by the linguistics to define vocabularies and grammers.
But as far as Google is concerned, they approach things in a different way. At Google they say that we feed the computer with billions of words of text, both monolingual text in the target language, and aligned text consisting of examples of human relationships between the languages. It is after this that they apply statistical learning techniques to construct a translational model. The research team at Google says that they have achieved several positive results in the research evaluations.
The results of this feature can be seen on the online version which consists of Arabic-English and English-Arabic translations. Trying is recommended as Arabic is quite tough to translate which needs long-distance reordering of words. Except for poetry you can try to translate specific texts such as news. The launch of this feature will probably grab more attentions of the users.
