In November there was a survey by Convera covering 1,112 individuals from diverse fields such as advertising, healtcare, marketing, finance, publishing and many other professions. The issue was their experience on the search engines. It is very surprising to note that majority of the professionals are not satisfied by their search related to work on famous internet search engines. The search engines do not show the desired results of the professionals and they ultimately give up their efforts.

According to the survey:

  • A commanding 95 percent of professionals find Internet search engine an aid for conducting work, yet only 40 percent say they are very satisfied with the results.
  • Only 21 percent feel that their search query is always understood.
  • Less than 25 percent of professionals are very confident that when using popular Internet search engines they've looked everywhere to find answers.

The survey further revealed that just one out of ten professionals get the desired result in their first try. Around 70% say that they end up seeing the sites that are not related to their work.

On being questioned of how they handle failed searches, 90% professionals use the same search engine and type a new term with same meaning in the hope that they will get better results while 60% resort to other famous search engines.

Most of the professionals are of the opinion that the search engines created by professional organizations or trade publications give more to the point content than other known consumer engines. The chief operating officer of Convera,  Kurt Gastrock said “ Consumer search engines are designed around consumer needs. As a result, they are not as productive as search engines tuned to specific professional communities.”
